Philosophy Cosmetics: A Review of Cosmetics by Philosophy

Custom Search

Philosophy cosmetics were first sold on television as a brand of creams and cleansers developed by dermatologists. Today, the brand has expanded to include make-up, fragrance, hair care and bath and body wash products.

The cosmetics and makeup line of the brand is fairly new – so, what are some of the best products? What are some of the worst products? Are they worth the price? For the answers to these questions and more, keep reading.

Price

Philosophy cosmetics typically cost about twice as much as your standard drugstore brand, but they're also significantly cheaper than most brands found in a high-end department store.

For example, a small tub of foundation powder may cost you around $35 and while those aren't Target prices, they're significantly less than what you'd expect to pay for, say, an Estee Lauder brand foundation.

Ease of Use

All the philosophy makeup products are fairly straightforward. The company carries a small line of foundations, concealers, blush, lip makeup, eyes & brows and basic accessories like brushes and blotting papers. The foundations are all powders, which might be a new experience for some customers, but are still simple to use.

Quality of the Product

As a company that has won multiple Best of Sephora and Glamour Magazine Beauty awards, Philosophy is a brand that's committed to quality. Like their famous creams and cleansers, their cosmetic line is backed by years of medical research and the belief that looking great starts with great skin.

The colors are basic and neutral, meaning they work with your skin, rather than against it. They're also modern, clean and fresh. However, the selection is small and the choices are very basic.

Best and Worst

Their airbrush foundation is not only light, giving a silky finish, it also provides an SPF of 15. The coverage is very natural, never looks caked on and leaves a smooth finish. Overall, philosophy's “the supernatural” foundation is probably the company's best cosmetic product.

Probably the worst Philosophy makeup product is their Big Gorgeous Eyes Mascara. Compared to the lift and extension provided by some of the bigger brands (like the amazing Clinique eye-popping mascara), this just doesn't cut it. Lashes get a little extension and a touch more color, but the impact is minimal and the results just aren't worth $22.

Conclusion

Overall, Philosophy cosmetics are a solid product. While the line is small and selection is limited, you may want to dabble around with some of the products, but avoid making a full commitment to the brand. If you can only buy one product, try out the supernatural foundation powder and avoid the mascara.
